In July 2022 the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) published a consultation on the “biggest electricity market reform in a generation” to identify and implement the reforms needed to electricity market arrangements in order to drive the necessary investment in, and efficient operation of, a secure low carbon electricity system by 2035. The consultation highlighted five key future system challenges to 2035, which included: investment, flexibility, location and networks, operability and whole system optimisation.
The initial REMA consultation closed on 10th October 2022 and next steps are expected to be announced in coming months. In the lead up to future announcements BIEE are arranging expert seminars to explore some of the proposed options for market reform in more depth.
