The Energy Institute (EI), in partnership with Ember and in collaboration with Kearney and KPMG, is proud to present the 75th edition of the Statistical Review of World Energy – the first comprehensive, freely available analysis of global energy markets for the previous year.
First published in 1952 as a six‑page internal briefing for a handful of bp executives, the Statistical Review has grown into one of the most widely respected and authoritative energy datasets in the world. From an era when coal was considered a ‘national treasure’ to today’s focus on clean energy and the energy transition, it has chronicled the evolution of the global energy system for over seven decades.
As the Statistical Review marks its 75th anniversary, it offers a moment to reflect not only on how far the energy system has come, but on where it is heading. From static tables to dynamic, interactive visualisations, the Review has evolved alongside the industry – while remaining grounded in its core mission: delivering accessible, transparent and trusted energy data.
The 2026 edition provides exclusive insights at global, regional and country level, showing how the energy system responded to major geopolitical, economic and environmental developments in 2025 – including persistent inflationary pressures, ongoing conflicts in Europe and the Middle East, and accelerating climate action. It also delivers detailed analysis of energy supply and demand trends, the performance of fuels and technologies, energy prices and global trade flows, patterns in consumer demand, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Selene Law is Head of the Statistical Review of World Energy at the Energy Institute. She has previously worked as an energy journalist and editor for leading price reporting agencies, including ICIS and OPIS (now Dow Jones), as well as an analyst at Wood Mackenzie and BMI Research. Prior to joining the Energy Institute, she led energy innovation research at Cleantech Group.

Euan is part of Ember’s Global Programme team, where he coordinates work on electrification. He has authored several of Ember’s flagship reports, including the Global Electricity Review and China Energy Transition Review, as well as working on the Statistical Review of World Energy, in partnership with the Energy Institute. Euan holds a masters degree in Physics from the University of Oxford, where he specialised in analysing global climate models.

Joanna Whittington has held a number of senior roles in the energy and transport sectors and in economic regulation. She is currently a Non-Executive Director at SGN, a UK gas distribution business, at the Payment Systems Regulator and at Powerful Women, an initiative which seeks a gender equal, diverse and inclusive energy sector.
Before starting her portfolio career, Joanna was Director General, Energy and Security at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) from October 2018 to December 2022.
Joanna was the Chief Executive Officer of the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) from January 2016. She joined the ORR in 2014 as Director of Railway Markets and Economics with responsibility for ORR’s economic regulation and competition roles. Prior to this she worked at Ofgem for over a decade where she held a number of senior posts. In her last role as Partner for Markets, she was responsible for regulation of the wholesale gas and electricity markets.
