Discuses the triangular trade in food, fertilizer and fuel, and the importance of phosphates across these, for society at the global level. Detailed statistics on production, producer countries and reserves are shown. Concerns over peak oil and linked to the idea of peak phosphate, given that its mining and processing are energy intensive and that production could be disrupted due to a wide range of global issues, such as energy, agriculture, macro economics, civil unrest and geopolitics. The links between global oil imports and food exports is explored, highlighting the urgent need for strategic interventions at key technical, economic, and social points to mitigate against the worst aspects of energy and resource challenges.
