What motivated you to join the BIEE mentoring programme?
I have always been interested in being mentored. I like to expand my working knowledge and develop my soft skills to support my professional development. The BIEE mentoring programme allowed me to take a first step into being mentored in an organised and supported way.
How suitable were the mentoring sessions in terms of timing, length, and flexibility?
I met with my mentor once a month for an hour which allowed us to keep up a good level of engagement and understanding. My mentor and I set agendas ahead of time if it was appropriate or sometimes followed where our discussions took us. This level of flexibility really allowed it to be tailored to mentor / mentee.
In what ways has the BIEE mentoring programme supported your career or professional development?
The mentoring I received gave me the knowledge of when; and courage to ask difficult questions, to feel empowered to speak my point of view and it gave me the toolkit I needed to continue to develop. The conversations and insights I was lucky enough to have gave me more perspective about my career and allowed me to think more broadly about a range of topics.
What was the most valuable or memorable part of the programme?
After getting to know me, my mentor was able to recognise that some of the difficulties in my role lay in the diverse nature of my stakeholders. Also knowing that I like to read, he recommended a book that was incredibly helpful to me and made me change how I communicated with stakeholders to support each type of personality style which was important for effective communication.
Would you recommend BIEE mentoring to others?
I would absolutely recommend mentoring to others, I have found the BIEE mentoring incredibly helpful and it gave me the opportunity to experience mentoring when I didn’t know where to start. It quickly progressed from that, and I have been fortunate to have developed a deeper understanding for what mentoring can achieve. I appreciate the honesty and perspective that an industry mentor can provide and am very grateful for my experience.
